Lines were used! I would be lost as heck without putting them down.

seems to use them as 'guides', then he does this thing were he lays down huge blocks of color and it magically comes together. I followed this tutorial frame by frame for this one:

I've invested well over 30 hours into this so far with only 2 characters "some what" finished. I'll be tackling the entire roster. On average, I can get a character to the level of the middle frame in 6-8 hours. I'm sure the more I do this, the more I'll be able speed up the process.
